Apr. 6--Internationally renowned electrical engineer John Robinson Pierce, the man who pioneered the communications satellite and came up with the word "transistor," died Tuesday in a Sunnyvale nursing home. He was 92.

During his expansive career, Pierce contributed to science, technology and the arts. Perhaps his first major breakthrough came as early as 1948 -- he coined the term "transistor" during a water-cooler break at Bell Laboratories, birthplace of the small, electronic switch.
