CANBERRA, Australia _ Generations of Australians have been cooed to sleep with a soft, cradle-side rendition of the ballad of a thieving bushman who drowns himself rather than being captured by the law, a song that embodies the indelible Aussie spirit.

So a court battle over the copyright of the country's unofficial anthem "Waltzing Matilda" has spurred legal debates in Australia about what constitutes a national treasure and what should be spared from commercial exploitation.
