Several recent theories of personal autonomy have conceived of, or portrayed, autonomy as something that one either has or does not have. (1) This is an unfortunate tendency for at least two reasons. First, theories that put forth demanding requirements for autonomy--for example, certain contents for preferences, external rationality requirements--tend to ignore or mask autonomy that agents possess. Second, theories that put forth minimal or thin conditions for autonomy tend to ignore or obscure the fact that autonomy can develop.
