J. Bottum's debut volume proves again that genuine poetry represents a triumph over what Eliot called "undisciplined squads of emotion." Poetry without emotion, of course, is sterile, but poetry that's nothing but emoting _ and there's much of that cluttering the shelves these days _ is not only tiresome but embarrassing. Not so Bottum's well-crafted verse, which gains power from its skillful deployment of images brought to critical mass through the power of reflection.
