To religion scholars, speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is part of the religious tradition of "ecstatic utterance." Other examples are Tibetan Buddhist chants and American Indian prayer songs.

Only rarely did speaking in tongues occur in the Christian church from the second to the 19th centuries, including instances among Methodists, Quakers and Mormons.

Its renaissance came at the start of the 20th century, when a Bible study group in Topeka, Kan., began to speak in tongues after reading about the story of Pentecost in the Bible. The ...
