For a couple of years now, a novelist friend has urged upon me his enthusiasm for the Australian writer Tim Winton. Author of 13 novels, including the Booker Prize-nominated "The Riders," Winton is considered one of his country's finest younger fiction writers.

My friend's favorite is a 1991 novel titled Cloudstreet. "He's doing in that book what I try to do in mine, only better," he says, and that's high praise, as my friend is no slouch himself.

But when the subject of Winton's latest novel, the seven-years-in-the-writing "Dirt Music," arose ...
