The merger of BankAmerica Corp (BofA) and Security Pacific Corp will have a major effect on California's banking industry. Some banks view the merger as a plus since they will benefit from the new business as disgruntled customers leave the merged bank. Other banks are fearful that the new BofA will become more powerful as it tries to squeeze out competitors in the market by offering low, cut-throat prices.
