ECUADOR celebrates its National Day today. Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro occupied Ecuador in 1532. During the colonial period, the country became a judicial district of both the Viceroyalty of Peru and Viceroyalty of New Granada. Ecuadors independence from Spain was won in 1822 by Venezuelan Antonio Jose Sucre, the chief lieutenant of Simon Bolivar. Ecuador then became part of Gran Colombia, a federation of the countries of Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama that struggled against Spain.
