PALOMINO VALLEY, Nev. -- Don't blame the wild horses for overrunning the West, their protectors say: It's the millions of cattle grazing public rangeland that should be rounded up, not the mustangs.

The advocates are making themselves heard loud and clear here in Nevada, where more than half the nation's 32,000 wild horses live.

Every week for the past two months, they've staged anti-roundup demonstrations at the state capitol in Carson City. And they've picketed the Reno office of the Bureau of Land Management to protest its ...
