Michael Mann had an odd notion for depicting Los Angeles at night in his neo-noir thriller ``Collateral'': Show how it really looks.

Not as simple as it sounds. The backdrop for dozens of black-and-white '40s crime dramas, countless TV cop shows and more recent hard-boiled classics such as ``Chinatown,'' ``Training Day'' and Mann's own ``Heat,'' L.A. may seem like a familiar setting for dark and demented doings.
