Aug. 7--Twenty-five years ago, thousands of people flocked to lower Market Street to witness a new, urban experiment, a suburban-style shopping mall in the heart of Center City.

The Gallery at Market East, which helped breathe new life into sleepy downtown Philadelphia, will celebrate its silver anniversary Friday with a daylong Festival of Communities.

The Gallery hosts an estimated 40,000 shoppers a day, more at holidays. About 60 percent of them are residents, 15 percent office workers and the rest tourists, Gallery ...
