Homer Avila didn't stop dancing until the cancer that cost him his leg reached his lungs and took his breath away. He was in Zvi Gotheiner's ballet class on a Friday morning, went to a concert at Dance Theater Workshop Saturday night, checked himself into Sloan-Kettering hospital around midnight, and was gone by twilight Sunday, April 27. He was 48.

To his colleagues he was courage itself. It was as if a missing leg were an irrelevancy for him, except that it gave his choreography an exemplary urgency and authenticity. And it inspired fine work by collaborators like Vicky ...
