BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- While the Supercenter is Wal-Mart's growth vehicle of choice the company has not forsaken the discount stores that were at the heart of its expansion for nearly four decades.

In fact, Wal-Mart plans to add as many as 55 discount stores this fiscal year. They will be built for the most part in locations that will not accommodate a Supercenter.
