Phosphorus nutrition of multiparous dairy cows may be especially critical around the time of calving because they are less able than younger cows to mobilize phosphorus from bone reserves during this period, according to a research report by David Beede and Ashley Peterson in the October 2003 Michigan Dairy Review.
They pointed out that most recent phosphorus research has addressed requirements and feeding of lactating cows because that is where the largest phosphorus flow occurs in the dairy herd.
