Aug. 27--An estimated one-fifth of the world's wild-spawning Pacific salmon emerge from the rivers of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. A largely untouched wilderness the size of California, Kamchatka has faced growing threats from poaching and development since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

This week, conservation groups including the Portland-based Wild Salmon Center said they are committing $13 million from the United Nations and other sources to establish salmon refuges encompassing four of Kamchatka's rivers.
