Sep. 24--SAN DIEGO--A massive Mexican fruit fly quarantine imposed on the Valley Center area last November was abruptly lifted Tuesday, freeing avocado, citrus and other fruit growers to resume unrestricted shipments of their crops.

California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary William Lyons Jr. announced the end of the quarantine ---- which affected a 130-square-mile area centered on Valley Center ---- Tuesday at a press conference in downtown San Diego.
