Massachusetts Contractors Emphasize Workplace Literacy with English Classes.

Nov. 1--MARSTONS MILLS, Mass.--Early Thursday morning, workers for Robert Maffei Landscape Contractors gathered in the company garage for their weekly meeting.

After dispensing with the usual announcements, company founder Robert Maffei asked, "What's the word of the month?"

"Accountability!" responded 35 voices in unison.

It's a term that apparently Maffei takes seriously as an employer. For the second year, his company has sponsored English classes for the 18 seasonal workers he brings in from Brazil on temporary work visas.
