Alaska's fabled Copper River salmon fishery went off with a bang on May 17, and ex-vessel prices continued to hold up well through the first opening in June.

"Prices have come down a little, but they're still holding up strong," says Dan Ashe, area management biologist with Alaska Department of Fish and Game, in Cordova.

Dockside prices for fresh king salmon were set at $6.25 per pound while sockeyes fetched $4.25 per pound during the first commercial opening. Most of the fish caught during the initial weeks of the fishery are whisked to shoreside packers ...
