Dec. 23--In what union leaders called "a significant shift," the Post-Dispatch dropped a controversial "open shop" provision from a contract proposal made Monday to the union representing about 600 newsroom, advertising and circulation workers.

The company's latest contract offer came 15 days after union members voted 353-15 to give union officials the power to take any necessary action, including a strike, to gain an acceptable deal. Talks between the two sides have stalled on the "open shop" issue. The previous labor contract expired Jan. 9.
