KINGSVILLE, Texas _ There are no tombstones, Rudolfo Silguero says. The wooden crosses that used to mark the graves have long since rotted away. There's no sign a cemetery ever was in the little grove of trees.
This morning is humid, following days of rain. Haze hugs the ground. Mosquitoes swarm. Grass and weeds stand high in the pasture between the grove and the stable where Silguero is working.
"My great-grandmother is buried over there," he says. "She was born here on Santa Gertrudis in 1888. Her father and mother were working here already."
