It's fair to call Geoff Muldaur a folkie, which is the right category for a guy who started with jug bands in the 1960s and was later a neighbor of Bob Dylan and the Band in the heyday of Woodstock, N.Y.

But Muldaur is really more of a musicologist who has dabbled in blues, country, bluegrass, modern jazz and soundtracks. This revisitation of songs by 1920s cornetist-pianist-jazz icon Bix Beiderbecke, an influential star with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra who died at 28 in 1931, is the latest result of his curiosity.
