NEW YORK _ The artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who died 100 years ago next month, was famous for many things: his mother; his nocturne paintings; his brilliant, full-length society portraits; his wit; his monocle; his foppish dress; his famous friends; and his enemies, including the loony critic John Ruskin, who all but destroyed Whistler's career with a wretched review of one of the artist's greatest paintings.
