When he died, in November 1992, Richard Yates was living in a small, unkempt duplex apartment in Birmingham, Ala. He was nearly broke. When he drove, which was rare, he drove an old, rusting Mazda.

And his passing made barely a ripple in the newspapers. The New York Times devoted just a dozen paragraphs to Yates' obituary. The Chicago Tribune did not even note his death until two weeks later, and then in a story about how Yates' ...
