Readers of Blake Morrison's first novel, a fictionalized memoir of the father of movable type, may find themselves occasionally entranced, but ultimately disappointed. Morrison's writing is elegant, his descriptions detailed and his story interesting, but the parts add up to a whole that fails to captivate the imagination and leaves us longing.
