THREE YEARS AGO, for World Book Day, a poll was carried out among 40,000 readers to discover who were the nation's 50 favourite writers. The results, published in The Daily Telegraph, showed that writers for the young hardly surprisingly took the first four slots; slots five and six were occupied by Maeve Binchy and Catherine Cookson, and then, squarely at number seven, and way ahead of other writers of her century, and even Shakespeare, was Jane Austen.
