Bid whist, or "Bid" as it is known by the faithful, is a variant of whist, a card game born in England that became popular with the powdered-wig set in Europe and America in the 1800s. Near the turn of the century, whist gave rise to bridge, and whites abandoned whist for its offspring, which they considered more intellectual.
