WASHINGTON _ Forty years ago July 2, Congress dealt a deadly blow to the laws and practices that had long kept black Americans living apart, divided from the jobs, education and social activities open to whites.

With a stroke of his pen in a nationally televised ceremony on July 2, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson gave life to the most sweeping civil-rights law since Reconstruction, irrevocably setting America on a new course.
