HONOLULU _ Failure is an all too familiar end in the restaurant business. Thousands of restaurants go under every year, the CLOSED sign hung out permanently.

Even the venerable local institution is not immune to changing tastes, shifting neighborhoods and rising prices.

So it seemed a sad finale when the Willows, a Honolulu legend dating back to World War II, closed its doors in 1993. Restaurants bearing the names of their star chefs _ Alan Wong's, Roy's, Chef Mavro _ had long ago eclipsed the Willows as the top choice of ...
