The so-called mystery of birefringence is easily explained by scientific facts, but the technical terms are abstruse.

What is birefringence? According to the American Heritage Dictionary, it is the resolution or splitting of a light wave into two waves with mutually perpendicular vibration directions by an optically anisotropic medium. It is also called double refraction. In non-technical language, birefringence occurs when a light wave passing through a transparent object does not do so equally in all wave lengths.
