THREE YEARS after the sharp blast of a whistle gave way to the banging thud of the gavel for Luis Tito Varela, the 13-year-referee of the Philippine Basketball Association turned two-term Metro Manila vice mayor is back where he once belonged.

At least, PBA commissioner Noli Eala would hope so.

If Varela says yes to an almost irresistible offer within the week, the clean-shaven former Crispa Redmanizer guard could be appointed supervisor of referees of the PBA, in time for the best-of-seven Fiesta Conference Finals.
