Political conflict, social misery and cultural tension probably favor literary richness. Indonesia, well endowed on all three scores, has produced several generations of serious writers. None has been so consistent in his vocation, nor suffered more for it, than Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Although his work isn't yet well-enough known abroad, he is the country's most accomplished and compulsive writer--short stories, novels, nonfiction, translations--in a career that has lasted more than forty years.
