Culturally speaking, the man who put Davenport, Iowa, on the map was native son Leon Bix Beiderbecke, a bona fide jazz genius who may have held more affection for his hometown than casual observers might realize.
Granted, Beiderbecke's parents famously shooed him out of Davenport when he was a teenager, because he had become too smitten with the city's emerging jazz scene for their tastes. Beiderbecke's high school studies were suffering, so, in 1921, he was dispatched to Lake Forest Academy in Illinois.
