After several years of significant increases in retail sales, the writing-instrument industry continues to record strong sales. According to reports from the Writing Instruments Manufacturers Association (WIMA), the national trade organization of manufacturers and suppliers, retail dollar sales of writing instruments (including pens, markers, and mechanical pencils) climbed in 1990 to an all-time high of $3.4 billion.
