Bar codes and radio frequency identification (RFID) will become much more prevalent in the pharmaceutical supply chain in the wake of new rules and recommendations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In February, the FDA issued its final rules requiring bar codes on most drugs and biological products administered in hospitals. Separately, the agency's anti-counterfeiting task force urged pharmaceutical manufacturers to use RFID to prevent bogus drugs from entering the supply chain.
