On a damp August day in 1907, eight farm wagons pulled into the square at Pike Place and Western Avenue, were swarmed by shoppers and within minutes were picked clean of every corncob, onion and turnip. The next week, historians say, there were 70 wagons in the square.

A tradition was born.

This year, the Seattle institution marks its centennial with events designed to celebrate and educate residents about the perennial must-see, which draws nearly 10 million visitors each year.
