They were known as the killing fields, a landscape of death that came to define the world's view of Cambodia in the late 20th century.
The Khmer Rouge, led by a notorious communist named Pol Pot, slaughtered, starved or worked to death an estimated 1.7 million to 3 million Cambodians from 1975 to 1979 in a fanatical utopian quest.
