Public apologies offered by political and religious leaders always have been a part of society. Recently however, the focus of these apologies has shifted away from an emphasis on self-defense toward the theme of atoning for past sins. For example, in 1995 Reverend Walter F. Sullivan, a bishop of the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia argued in America for the importance of seeking atonement for the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Sullivan, 1995).
