A robotic "inchworm" that can slip under a patient's breastbone and crawl around on the surface of the heart might one day be used to perform therapeutic procedures on a beating heart.
Using suction pads to adhere to the heart's surface, the two-footed device could crawl to any location on the heart, where it might be used to inject replacement cells, implant electrodes or emplace shunts to restore blood flow to clogged coronary arteries.
