THEY were the fighting elite who set sail 60 years ago to free Europe from Nazi tyranny.

Yesterday veterans of the world's biggest seaborne invasion returned to France, retracing the journey that took them on to the hell of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

So many of them knew it would be the last time they were making this journey an emotional last farewell to lost friends.

Thousands lined the walls of Portsmouth harbour, where much of the D-Day fleet set sail for France, to wave them off.
