Monroe Trout heads for-profit network for non-profit hospitals

He's been a physician and a drug researcher and now he heads a health-care network with more than 1,000 member hospitals. But it was as a patient that Dr. Monroe Trout got one of his most revealing looks at American health care.

Last year Trout required delicate brain surgery. He looked through the list of physicians who belonged to his preferred provider organization, but he couldn't find one who had ever done such an operation. He finally had the operation performed at a hospital 3,000 miles away. ...
