On a summer day in the 1950s, 10-year-old Carol Marks was playing with a friend along the river banks in Hastings when, like most girls her age, she managed to do exactly what her mother warned her against -- in this case falling into the choppy, muddy waters of the Hudson.

Since that afternoon of maternal scolding, a nervous trip to the doctor, and tetanus shots, Marks -- the founder, publisher and editor of Hudson River Boating News -- still has not been able to shake Hudson fever from her system.
