ON THE surface, Laurent Fabius, a former prime minister and now a presidential hopeful, would appear to have won the latest round of the power struggle within the French Socialist Party. On January 9th he at last achieved his long-standing goal of becoming party leader. But Michel Rocard, another former prime minister and presidential hopeful, may yet reap the greater benefit from a behind-the-scenes deal to clinch Mr Fabius's nomination.
