Days ago, passing through Shawomet
into the Narragansett country, I heard
or thought I heard a conversation
among the trees, one of those times
when the leaves give tongue to a dialect
almost human, and there, at a turn
of the way, that man of gusts and jars
Samuel Gorton, who once I feared
would drive me for a little peace
from Providence all the way to
Patience Island, and make of me
a hermit there, so needful was that man
