Research on cooperative learning has proliferated in the last 3 decades. Researchers originally began efforts to examine its effectiveness by comparing cooperative learning with traditional instruction. Numerous studies were conducted in which student outcome measures, usually scores on quizzes or tests, were compared for students assigned to either cooperative learning or whole class instruction (Slavin, 1996).
