The Fresno County Jail is near capacity, prompting Sheriff Richard Pierce to find more room for the recent surge of inmates.
The alternative was returning inmates to the streets.
Pierce went to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday and got its OK to open the north jail annex's fifth floor, which hasn't been used to house adult inmates since it was added last year.
