A village nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire was the birthplace of one of the most significant figures in the development of commerce and industry in early Bellingham.

John Joseph Donovan, civil engineer, railroad builder, and lumber baron, was born to Irish immigrant parents in Rumney, N.H., on September 8, 1858. John, or J.J., grew up on a farm his father had purchased after first working as a railroad construction laborer on his arrival from Ireland.
