The Nobel Prize-winning Greek Poet George Seferis once said, "Our country is small, but our tradition is vast." One of the smallest countries ever to host the world's largest sporting event, Greece will face many challenges when the Olympic Games return home this summer. But as the originator of the Games (see "Olympic Games, "pp. 12-13), Greece has unbeatable qualifications.

Between August 13 and 29, Athens will welcome 16,000 athletes and sports officials, more than 20,000 journalists, and millions of fans. Another 4 billion people will be watching the action on TV.
