PHILADELPHIA _ Until three years ago, Bill Guarnere's heroics in World War II were mostly unknown even to his neighbors.

Then came the 2001 HBO series "Band of Brothers," which zeroed in on the company of paratroopers with whom he had fought on D-Day and in battles across France, Holland and Belgium.

Suddenly, Guarnere, now 81, had Hollywood actors and a People Magazine photographer in his home. Strangers sought his autograph. He even heard his Easy Company nickname called out in airports: "Hey, Wild Bill!"
