Aircraft have come a long way since the Wright Flyer took off in 1903.

Today's planes are technological marvels - fast, streamlined and largely controlled by computers.

So it may come as some surprise to learn that scientists at the cutting edge of avionic engineering are experimenting with a technique that the Wright brothers first invented.

Modern aircraft have wings with movable surfaces like flaps and ailerons to provide control.

The new idea is to dispense with control surfaces and bend the entire wing.
