Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke made a fortune manufacturing model ships and railways in Northampton, England. In 1916 his father bought an early nineteenth-century terraced house at 78 Derngate, which he gave to his son on his marriage in 1917. To refurbish it the couple hired the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
